Highlights from this month’s report include:
- Total global passenger-related aviation emissions estimated at 58.64m tonnes.
- 38% of aviation emissions in November 2023 were covered by a compliance programme such as CORSIA or EU ETS.
- The largest growth rates in the 25 largest emitting markets in November 2023, when compared with November 2022 were Hong Kong (+173%) and China (+55%).
- Five markets (Spain, Turkey, Mexico, Qatar and Saudi Arabia) out of the 25 largest emitting markets saw aviation emissions in November 2023 above November 2019 levels.
Spotlight on United Arab Emirates – the 5th largest source of passenger related aviation emissions in November 2023 and the current host of the UN’s COP 28 conference.
- In November 2023, passenger related aviation emissions from UAE airports were estimated at 1.88m tonnes; 3% below pre pandemic levels in November 2019 and up 18% on November 2022.
- 68% of emissions from UAE airports are captured under CORSIA
- As the largest airline operating from the country, Emirates is the largest source of emissions from UAE airports, with emissions estimated at 13.3m tonnes in the last 12 months
- Low cost airlines Wizz Air (Malta / Abu Dhabi) and SmartWings operate the most efficient routes from the UAE, according to RDC’s CARE Index.
