Highlights from this month’s report include:
- Global passenger-related emission for Calendar Year 2023 were 726m tonnes (-11% compared to 2019)
- For December 2023, emissions are estimated at 62.5m tonnes
- All of the 25 largest markets for emissions were up compared to December 2022 and five markets (Spain, Türkiye, Mexico, Qatar and Saudi Arabia) saw aviation emissions above December 2019 levels.
Spotlight on The Netherlands – the 6th largest source of passenger related aviation emissions within Europe in December 2023.
- For the whole of 2023, passenger-related emissions from airports in The Netherlands were 8.0m tonnes, up 12% on 2022, but down 15% compared to pre-pandemic levels
- 78% of emissions from Dutch airports are captured under a trading scheme
- As the largest airline operating from the country, KLM is the largest source of emissions from Dutch airports, with emissions estimated at 3.5m tonnes in the last 12 months
