Our July 2022 Aviation Emissions Report looks at global passenger related aviation emissions, with a specific focus on the 25 largest markets by total aviation emissions.
Our focus country this month is New Zealand. New Zealand’s borders have just fully reopened following a long closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic and we have a look at how this closure translated through to aviation emissions.
Focus market on this month's report: New Zealand
Highlights from this month’s report include:
- Total global passenger-related aviation emissions estimated at 56m tonnes.
- Just 40% of aviation emissions in July 2022 were covered by a compliance programme such as Corsia or EU ETS.
- The largest growth rates in the 25 largest emitting markets in July 2022, when compared with July 2021 were United Kingdom (+195%), Thailand (+193%) and Vietnam (+169%).
- Year to date (January to July 2022) United States is the largest source of aviation emissions (84.5m tonnes CO2), followed by China (35.8m tonnes CO2) and United Kingdom (12.8m tonnes CO2).
Spotlight on New Zealand :
- Pre pandemic New Zealand’s monthly passenger related aviation emissions typically ranged from 0.31m to 0.41m tonnes of CO2. During the Covid-19 pandemic monthly emissions dropped considerably given the border restrictions in place and ranged from just 0.01m to 0.13m tonnes CO2 a month.
- In July 2022, New Zealand was the 46th largest source of passenger related aviation emissions generating 0.16m tonnes of CO2, 53% below pre pandemic levels in July 2019.
- 53% of these emissions in July 2022 from New Zealand were covered by the CORSIA compliance scheme.
- Inter-continental services have historically been the largest contributor to New Zealand’s aviation emissions. However, during the Covid-19 pandemic the contribution decreased given the border restrictions in place and in 2021 domestic services accounted for the majority of passenger related aviation emissions. With the border now fully reopened we’d expect to see the inter-continental contribution return over time.
- Air New Zealand is the largest emitter of aviation emissions from the New Zealand market over the past 12 months, emitting 3.9 times the next largest emitter Singapore Airlines.
