In April 2022 global flight departures were up 33% compared to April 2021. Our Aviation Emissions Report looks at how this translates into global emissions, with a specific focus on the 25 largest markets by total aviation emissions.
Our focus country this month is France - the eighth largest market for total aviation emissions in April 2022.

Highlights from this month’s report include:
- Total global passenger-related aviation emissions estimated at 44.6m tonnes, with 61% not covered by a major compliance scheme such as CORSIA or EU-ETS.
- Flight emissions from 22 out of the 25 largest emitting markets grew compared to April 2021 levels, the largest growth rates were United Kingdom (+446%), Spain (+307%) and Italy (+294%).
- All 25 markets of the largest emitting markets saw aviation emissions in April 2022 above April 2020 levels, which is to be expected given April 2020 saw air transport operations almost entirely halt due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
- Spotlight on France - the eighth largest source of global aviation emissions in April 2022, generating 1.12m tonnes of CO2, +156% above April 2021, but still 28% below pre-pandemic levels seen in April 2019.
- In April 2022, 72% of aviation emissions from France were covered by a compliance scheme.
- Inter-continental services are the largest contributor to France’s aviation emissions between 2018 and 2022.
- Air France is the largest emitter of aviation emissions from the French market, emitting nearly 7.5 times the next largest emitter easyJet.
